Rupelmonde / Belgium - 1
Rupelmonde is a tiny little village on the banks of the river the Scheldt. In the 12th century a gigantic stronghold was build to defend both rivers (the rupel & the scheldt). The enormous castle had 17 towers. First the archive of the county of Flanders found a safe home here, and later on the castle became a prison.
It was in this prison that Robrecht III, Count of Flanders locked up his own son because of high treason. Philip The Good kept Frank van Borselen imprisoned here. In 1538 an alleged witch, Kathelyne Duerincx, was kept prisoner and tortured here before being burned at the stake.
Also Gerardus Mercator was imprisoned for 7 months, in 1544, under the accusation of heresy. In 1678, when Spanish and Dutch troops were fighting against French troops, the castle was destroyed.
